IMPLANT & SURGICAL CARE CONSULTATIONS
A dental implant can support a crown, bridge or denture, but suitability depends on your mouth and overall health. A consultation helps you compare implant treatment with other ways to replace missing teeth.
An implant is placed in the jawbone to provide an anchor for a replacement tooth or set of teeth. It can avoid preparing adjacent healthy teeth in some situations, but it also involves surgery, healing time, ongoing cleaning and cost.
A bridge or removable denture may be a better fit for some patients. Your dentist can explain the trade-offs for the gap you want to address rather than assuming an implant is always best.
Planning may include an examination, X-rays and, in some cases, three-dimensional imaging. The dentist assesses gum health, available bone, nearby teeth, your bite, medical history and medicines. Active dental disease may need treatment before any implant procedure is considered.
Some patients need a bone graft or other preparation, which can lengthen the timeline. Smoking and some health conditions can affect healing. Ask which parts of the proposed care can be provided at the clinic and whether a specialist referral is appropriate.
Implant placement is commonly done with local anaesthetic. The bone then needs time to heal around the implant before the final restoration can be fitted. The number of visits and the time between them vary with the treatment plan.
Implants need daily cleaning and regular dental reviews after treatment. The gum and bone around an implant can develop problems if plaque builds up, and the attached crown, bridge or denture may need maintenance over time.
Only an assessment can answer that. If there is not enough bone at the proposed implant site, the dentist may discuss grafting or an alternative to an implant.
The timeline depends on healing, the number of teeth being replaced and whether preparation such as a graft is needed. Your dentist should provide a plan after assessment.
