Root Canal Cost in Mumbai: What Determines the Price?

The total depends on the tooth, treatment complexity and the restoration afterward. Here is what to ask before comparing quotes.

The useful answer is an itemised estimate

There is no single reliable root canal price for every tooth in Mumbai. A front tooth, a molar with several canals, and a tooth needing retreatment can require different amounts of work. The final cost may also include an examination, X-rays, a build-up and a crown or other permanent restoration. Ask for those parts to be shown separately so that two quotes cover the same treatment.

A phone quote can be a starting point, but it cannot tell you how restorable the tooth is or what its canals look like. An examination and appropriate imaging are needed before a dentist can give you a meaningful plan.

Why one tooth can cost more than another

Back teeth often have more canals and can be harder to reach than front teeth. Curved or narrow canals, extensive decay, a fractured tooth, an old crown and a previous root canal can add complexity. Your dentist may recommend specialist assessment for a difficult case. None of these factors means that a higher fee is automatically better; they explain why the work quoted may differ.

If an infection is present, ask whether treatment is expected to take one or more visits and whether a temporary filling is included between visits. The number of visits is decided by the clinical situation, not by a universal rule.

The crown is a separate decision and often a separate fee

Root canal treatment cleans and seals the inside of the tooth. It does not finish the job of rebuilding the tooth for biting. Some teeth need a filling; many heavily damaged back teeth need a crown or another protective restoration. The amount of tooth left, its position and your bite guide that decision.

Ask whether the quote covers the final restoration, the material proposed and any core build-up or post. A low root canal fee can be misleading if the necessary restoration has been left out.

How to compare two estimates fairly

Ask each dentist which tooth is being treated, what the diagnosis is, what the X-ray shows, which steps are included, and what might change the estimate. Find out whether follow-up visits, medicines, a crown and taxes are included. Keep a copy of the written plan so you can compare like with like.

Cost also belongs beside prognosis. Ask how much sound tooth remains, what chance the dentist sees of restoring it, and what the alternatives would cost over time. Extraction can appear cheaper at first but may lead to a separate decision about replacing the missing tooth.

Do you definitely need a root canal?

Pain alone does not prove that you do. A filling may be enough when decay has not irreversibly damaged the pulp, while deep inflammation or infection may call for root canal treatment. Your dentist should explain the examination, any cold or bite tests, and imaging that support the diagnosis. A second opinion is reasonable if the recommendation or cost is unclear.

If you have facial swelling, fever, or pain that is rapidly worsening, seek prompt dental care. Difficulty breathing or swallowing with swelling needs urgent medical help.
